Digitizing the Guggenheim — Quantapoint Helps Restore a Frank Lloyd Wright Treasure
The Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, has been suffering from surface cracks since its construction in 1959. The restoration team was faced with the challenge of documenting the structural cracks and formulating an action plan to repair the flaws and restore and preserve the integrity of the building. Accurate documentation of the interior was also required to determine exhibit locations, traffic flow patterns and spatial planning. Quantapoint digitized both the interior and the exterior of the Guggenheim. Quantapoint used our award-winning Laser Modelâ„¢ technology to create a high-resolution digitized version of the Guggenheim that could be accessed directly or within various CAD packages. Quantapoint created highly accurate 3D models for structural and engineering analysis and the additional drawings as needed for interior space planning.
Quantapoint Supports Murphy & Dittenhafer in Award Winning Restoration of Historic Hotel — The Tremont Grand, Baltimore Maryland
The scope of work involved the restoration and cleaning of the exterior structure and renovation of all interior finishes. This required accurate documentation of scagliola columns, ornamental plaster, murals, marble staircase and bronze elements of the 38,000 square foot structure. Unfortunately, no existing conditions documentation was available and re-creating it manually would have been a time-consuming and costly manual process. According to Michael Murphy, a Principal at Murphy & Dittenhafer, “Quantapoint’s scans were especially valuable because of the many areas of the building with elaborate ornamentation that we wanted to preserve while making additions. For example, the reflected ceiling plans assisted our team in identifying appropriate spaces to locate new life safety and other devices within the detailed period ceiling treatments.”
Quantapoint and Pfaffmann & Associates Preserve the Meadowcroft Rockshelter - Helping to Protect a National Archaeological Treasure
Considered a Pennsylvania Commonwealth Treasure, the Meadowcroft Rockshelter is a rock overhang under which the first Americans encamped to protect them from the elements. It provides archaeologists with a rare glimpse into the lives of the first people to arrive in the New World. According to Rob Pfaffmann, founder of Pfaffmann & Associates, “One of the biggest challenges for us was surveying an area that included a rocky cliff side of varying elevations, existing staircases and tree limbs, but we needed accurate dimensions to create architectural drawings and 3D models.” Added Pfaffman, “By using Quantapoint, Pfaffmann and Associates was able to reduce uncertainty, reduce rework and enable the project owners to get the sign-off they needed to begin the construction process.”

Herbert S. Newman and Partners understood that restoring the school in a respectful and historically accurate manner would require a detailed understanding of the structure, including exterior elevations and the very intricate brick patterns on the facade. Unfortunately, no existing conditions documentation was available and re-creating it manually had proven to be a time-consuming and costly manual process for the architects. According to Tim Callahan, a Principal at Herbert S. Newman and Partners, “Quantapoint provides a fast, cost-effective and accurate method to document complex or intricate buildings.”
Quantapoint Helps WJE Significantly Reduce Project Cost and Time While Improving Quality
Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) was asked to develop plans for repairs needed to an historic facade of one of New York City’s largest museums. There were minimal existing drawings so WJE had to survey and document the facade while minimizing disturbance to the structure and its landscaped site. According to Timothy Allanbrook, a Senior Consultant for WJE, “Quantapoint brought many benefits to the project. Without their services we would have had to depend on the few fragments of historic drawings that we had been able to find. Without Quantapoint we would have needed at least three times more staff to complete the assignment.
Quantapoint Documents Richly Detailed Church for Historical Preservation Project
Considered an important Boston historical landmark, the Arlington Street Church was scheduled for general restoration and preservation work.
