Greenmount Cemetery Chapel Documented

The Chapel at Greenmount Cemetery is a two-story, monumental religious structure located at the top of a small bluff near the southeast corner of the Cemetery, which is located on Greenmount Avenue, just west of downtown Baltimore, Maryland.

Originally built in 1860, the Chapel is octagonal in plan and consists primarily of decorative brownstone walls, arches, flying buttresses, finials, and similar structural and architectural elements and ornamentation that are characteristic of the Victorian Gothic Revival style of architecture, that was popular during the period in which the Chapel was built.

Fenestration on the building appears to consist primarily of the original, leaded, stained glass windows at the Main Level and Clerestory spaces of the Chapel. Each window remains protected on the exterior by an external layer of rigid, clear plastic ("plexiglass") that has been sealed at the perimeter of each window opening with a continuous line of what appears to be a now-failed urethane sealant. Although not visible during the laser survey, Wiss, Janney, Elstner's has determined that the roofing over the Main Level Chapel and Clerestory spaces consists primarily of standing seam copper roofing installed over the original Chapel roof structure.

Interior wall and ceiling surfaces at both the upper and lower (basement) levels of the Chapel appear to consist primarily of painted portland cement plaster, with decorative limestone and brownstone columns, column capitals, and arched window and door surrounds.

Quantapoint was contracted to produce measured drawings for historic documentation, use in design of scaffolding, and as a part of the repair contract documents. The drawings produced by Quantapoint included elevations, sections and plan drawings of the Chapel. The scanning team was on-site for three days collecting data. Drawings of the Chapel were returned to Wiss, Janney, Elstner in three weeks.

Martina Driscoll, project engineer said, "We were very pleased with the accuracy and level of detail. We had very good feed back from the client."
